Most optical phenomena can be accounted for using the classical electromagnetic description of light. Complete electromagnetic descriptions of light are, however, often difficult to apply in practice. Practical optics is usually done using simplified models. The most common of these, geometric optics, treats light as a collection of rays that travel in straight lines and bend when they pass through or reflect from surfaces. Physical optics is a more comprehensive model of light, which includes wave effects such as diffraction and interference that cannot be accounted for in geometric optics. Historically, the ray-based model of light was developed first, followed by the wave model of light. Progress in electromagnetic theory in the 19th century led to the discovery that light waves were in fact electromagnetic radiation.

Active mode-locking of mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers with short gain recovery time. Yongrui Wang and Alexey Belyanin (2015), Optics Express http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/OE.23.004173
We investigate the dynamics of actively modulated mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) using space- and time-domain simulations of coupled density matrix and Maxwell equations with resonant tunneling current taken into account. We show that it is possible to achieve active mode locking and stable generation of picosecond pulses in high performance QCLs with a vertical laser transition and a short gain recovery time by bias modulation of a short section o

Germanium Optical Material
Del Mar Photonics manufactures precision Germanium optical components, which are widely used for infrared applications. Its useful transmission range is from 1.8 micron to 17 micron. Due to wide transmission range and opaque in visible Ge is well suited for manufacturing of optical components for IR applications in lasers and optical systems. Its high index of refraction (greater than 4) makes it of particular interest for lens design.
Germanium components are used with AR coatings because of high surface reflectivity of substrate.
Germanium blocks UV and visible light as well as the infrared up to about 2µm. Its high index is desirable for the design of lenses.
Germanium (Ge) infrared optical materials for the manufacture of quality thermal imaging systems.
Diamond-like carbon coatings (DLC)
Being applied to Germanium or Silicon windows and lenses DLC provides BBAR performance coupled with excellent protection of outer optical surfaces from negative influences of the environment (humidity, dust, atmospheric precipitations) and stays inert to mechanical strikes, thermal shock, acids, salts, solvents and other chemical reagents. It consists of carbon and hydrogen. Field of application is military devices and outside thermal cameras. Sometimes it's better to have window and lenses coated DLC+BBAR. DLC coatings can be applied to Ge and Si substrates of sizes as big as 320mm in diameter.

We show that it is possible to achieve active mode locking and stable generation of picosecond pulses in high performance QCLs with a vertical laser transition and a short gain recovery time by bias modulation of a short section of a monolithic Fabry-Perot cavity. In fact, active mode locking in QCLs with a short gain recovery time turns out to be more robust to the variation of parameters as compared to previously studied lasers with a long gain recovery time. We investigate the effects of spatial hole burning and phase locking on the laser output.

(CNN)The question everyone is asking, now that the two Dannemora, New York, fugitives are no longer on the run, is. What took the cops so long?. It's the wrong question. The real question we should be asking is. How is it possible that nobody, other than the fugitives, got hurt? No one from law enforcement. No one from the public. Not a single injury, not a single fatality ...Philip Lerman. There's certainly an element of luck involved ... ....
